Hereditary in general is riddled with heavy and dark subject matter. Specific themes in the canon that warrant a warning are listed below; however, most of these will not directly come up in my writing for Peter without prior discussion / are related to his past or other characters. Things written in red mean that they are prone to come up frequently in my writing for him.
โข psychological, emotional, and physical distress related to demonic possession โ paranoia, convulsions that often result in self-harm, effects of self-harm (frequently hosting marks, cuts, bruises, etc.), outright attempts at self-harm (generally involving throwing himself around or smashing into things), dissociation / identity confusion / much Vacant Staring, choking, tongue-clucking, erratic movements, and an assortment of other odd behaviours and sounds. Peter's nose was also broken in one of the demon fits, an incident which severely traumatised him and frequently pops up in his introspection. Depending on the situation, the demon Paimon himself may make an outright appearance, and his reactions / behaviour may vary from lost, confused, and docile, to frightened, to violent. Peter may also at times display his little sister's persona outright, answering to "Charlie". They're all a weird jumbled mess. It's fine... His possession means that Peter is also frequently physically ill (cold sweats, fever, fatigue, etc.) Paimon can also cling to ceilings in a way that I often describe as spiderlike, and fly in an unsettling "swimming" manner. More information on Paimon and his abilities can be found here.
โข themes of a literal demon being a metaphor for inherited mental illness / familial dysfunction / abuse / trauma
โข witchcraft / the occult / the goetia / demonology / dark ceremonial magic / cult business
โข sรฉance business
โข mental illness (Peter's family has a history of mental illness, including schizophrenia, psychotic depression, and dissociative identity disorder. He has severe depression and anxiety, and these are a core part of his character in my writing for him)
โข psychological and emotional trauma
โข panic attacks (which Peter is prone to experiencing)
โข familial discord and dysfunction, including emotional neglect and abuse (both presented in a more ~subtle, insidious light), and attempted filicide (which was unsuccessful, but Peter was heavily emotionally damaged by the incident)
โข familial suicide / suicidal ideation
โข mention of attempted abortion / miscarriage
โข imagery of insects (ants) swarming in places they should not be (facial orifices)
โข underage drug use (marijuana, which Peter does frequently)
โข anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction)
โข familial death (including a thirteen-year-old) | specific warnings for: decapitation, burning to death, and suicide / self-decapitation (I will not describe these deaths in explicit detail without warning; generally, I will only allude to the fact Peter's family are dead, and the emotional effect this has on him. If you would prefer for me not to bring a certain type of familial death up (like a specific family member), please feel free to let me know. The emotional weight of his familial loss is a huge part of my general writing for him, and I would never want to potentially upset someone. I can absolutely leave something out.)
If you would like to opt out of interactions with Peter or if there is something in particular you would prefer not to be mentioned, please let me know below! If there is something you'd like further clarification on, feel free to ask. Anonymous is enabled, and comments are screened.
