[ It's safe to say she takes no pleasure in telling him any of this. But he needs to know, and she wants to keep him safe. ]

Dementors makes you feel like you'll never be happy again. They take all the joy and good memories from you and that's just from being in their presence.

But I suppose what they want is your soul. They do something called a Dementor's Kiss, where they literally suck your soul out of you. It's worse than death.

Unfortunately, yes. Ordinarily they're used to guard our prison, Azkaban.

[ Peter's only seen a small fraction of Luna's world, and if anything it's been positive. Her magic's been used as a benefit, as a tool to protect. But there is far more to her home — much of it is terrible and dark, too. ]

What do people get sent to prison for in your world?

[ Is it all magic-related? And this is definitely a shock. Luna using magic in general had been a shock of its own, but it had been alongside the shock of being accosted by his undead grandmother. Weighing the options, being rescued by a girl who he'd soon learned to be a witch had seemed a very positive thing.

Use of dark magic, mostly. Things like murder, torture or harm against other magical people or Muggles.

[ For the most part, it's all magic-related. Luna suspects there are other reasons. Rookwood, for example, who she had fought against in the Ministry had been imprisoned for being a spy during the First Wizarding War.

No. Once a Dementor has removed your soul, it's gone forever.

The only thing that can be done is keeping them away in the first place. There's a spell witches and wizards like me can use called a Patronus charm. They can't stand it.
