Hereditary in general is riddled with very heavy and dark subject matter. Specific things that warrant a warning are listed below; however, most of these will not directly come up in my writing for Peter without prior discussion / are related to his past or other characters. Things written in red mean that they are prone to come up frequently in my writing for him โ if not directly voiced by Peter, then in his introspection.
I also need to stress that googling / searching Hereditary can yield unsettling results. I'm mentioning this because I know people get curious by unfamiliar canons and might want to look it up. Please be warned that searching could potentially show graphic images of a child's remains. All of the other content warnings below may also be subject to showing up in google searches, but this one is a very popular image. I know very well that this sort of thing could seriously upset and disturb people, so please use caution. For more detailed warnings for those who might need them, I'll also leave a link for Hereditary's doesthedogdie.com page.
demonic possession.
NOTE: I typically default to playing Peter as possessed by Paimon, but these may be subject to change depending on a game setting / nerfing / etc.
PHYSICAL DISTRESS / EPILEPTIC & SELF-HARM ASSOCIATIONS
Physically, Peter is prone to flinching, twitching, strange movements, contortions, etc, as well as more severe convulsions that result in "self" harm, generally involving throwing himself around or smashing into things. (Peter's nose was also broken in one of the demon fits, an incident which severely traumatised him and frequently pops up in his introspection.) He very often hosts marks, cuts, and bruises from the demon. His possession also means that Peter is frequently physically ill (cold sweats, fever, fatigue, vomiting) and suffers from strange "zoned out" spells and fainting spells. He is also prone to making noises that can be perceived as frightening, such as choking, wheezing, and clucking his tongue.
EMOTIONAL / PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS
Paranoia, dissociation, much Vacant Staring and occasional drooling on himself, panic attacks, memory loss, memory confusion, lost time, strong themes of loss of autonomy, strong themes of loss of self.
PERSONALITY / IDENTITY CONFUSION & SHIFTS
Peter at times will display confusion as to his own identity, or seem to be someone else entirely. At times, the demon Paimon himself may make an outright appearance, and his reactions / behaviour may vary from lost, confused, & docile, to frightened, to feral & violent, to something more regal and Demon King. He may also at times display Peter's 13-year-old little sister's persona / identity, whether it's simply her behaviours or outright answering to "Charlie". They're all a jumbled-up mess. It's fine...
INHUMAN / DEMONIC CAPABILITIES
Aside from a host of supernatural abilities, Paimon can also physically crawl on walls and ceilings in a way that I often describe as spiderlike, move very quickly, and float / levitate / fly. His movements are often erratic / strange, and very clearly "inhuman."
ANIMAL DEATH / MUTILATION
Paimon/Charlie will cut the heads off of things from time to time... which I will absolutely not have happen without checking first. Generally, he will mutilate animals he finds dead, so actual animal death is not a thing I would really be writing out. Dead animals are also often involved in the art crafts that the demon creates.
supernatural.
SUPERNATURAL FATE / BLOODLINE-RELATED FATE
being "destined" to be the host for a demonic entity / "inheriting" a fate / etc.
DEMONIC SACRIFICE
THE OCCULT
demonology, grimoires / The Goetia, witchcraft, dark ceremonial magic, demonolatry (the worship of demons), rituals, sรฉances
CULTS
cult manipulation, being stalked / terrorised / groomed / isolated / sacrificed by a cult
THEMES OF HAUNTINGS / GHOSTS
GENERAL SUPERNATURAL TERROR
supernaturally-induced visions, hallucinations, death
INSECT HORROR / IMAGERY
flies, ants swarming in places they should not be (facial orifices)
natural.
CULTS
reiterating this cw here, as even the "natural" horrors in Hereditary are due to cult manipulation
MENTAL ILLNESS
Peter's family has a history of severe mental illnesses, including: schizophrenia, psychotic depression, and dissociative identity disorder. Peter also has depression and anxiety, and these are a core part of his character and how he interacts with things. My writing for him also includes themes of a demon being a metaphor for the effects of trauma, abuse, and mental illness, and there are themes of those more severe mental illnesses in him (for example, themes of his demonic possession parallel his grandmother's dissociative identity disorder, his uncle's schizophrenia, etc). An important note with this is that the literal demon is not used to demonise mental illness; in fact, the demon wasn't the "enemy" of this story at all, but rather the abuse and manipulation done to a family by fellow humans, as well as generational abuse, trauma, and dysfunction. There is also a ton of ambiguity to everything, and it's more touching on concepts of a thing than a clear-cut representation of it.
GENERATIONAL TRAUMA, DYSFUNCTION, ABUSE
This is a wide spectrum and a central theme of the movie with much nuance to it, but generally: psychological and emotional abuse and neglect, moreso than physical. However, this does include attempted filicide / child murder, which was unsuccessful (and done while the parent was sleepwalking), but Peter was heavily emotionally damaged by the incident. This also includes unwanted / "pressued" pregnancy and attempted abortion / miscarriage, but neither of these things will ever come up in Peter's introspection, as he doesn't know about them.
SUICIDE / SUICIDAL IDEATION
Familial suicide is a strong presence / theme. Members of Peter's family committed suicide, Peter also has reoccurring suicidal ideation from time to time, and his jumping out of an attic window was technically a suicide attempt (albeit one done in the moment and not necessarily "planned"). This can also be seen as a failed suicide attempt.
IMMEDIATE FAMILIAL DEATH
Specific warnings for: fatal car accident, anaphylaxis / severe allergic reaction, immolation / burning to death, decapitation, suicide by throat trauma.
โ NOTE: I will not describe these deaths in explicit detail / how Peter's family died, without warning. Generally, I will only allude to the fact his family are dead, and the emotional effect this has on him. If you would prefer for me not to bring a certain type of familial death up (such as a specific family member), please feel free to let me know. The emotional weight of his familial loss is a huge, huge part of my general writing for him, and I would never want to potentially upset someone. I can absolutely leave something out.
PANIC ATTACKS
Peter is very prone to experiencing them.
GENDER CONFUSION / DYSPHORIA / ASSOCIATED THEMES
on Peter's little sister's part, and at times in Paimon by association.
CAR ACCIDENT & RELATED TRAUMA; PTSD RELATED TO CAR ACCIDENTS
This doesn't often come up directly, but Peter suffers heavily from this, to the point he likely can't be in a car.
DRUG USE / MARIJUANA
Peter frequently smokes pot; however, I don't really often play this out / it's usually just mentioned in passing.
